The NSS Symbol
The NSS symbol is based on the Konark Wheel of the Sun Temple, Odisha — a symbol of continuity, progress and dynamic change. Its red and blue colours represent energy and the cosmos of service.
About the National Service Scheme
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of the Government of India under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It was launched on 24 September 1969. The motto of NSS is “Not Me But You”, expressing the essence of democratic living and selfless service. Volunteers participate in regular activities and special camping programmes to serve their community and develop their personality.

From a bold national idea in 1969 to two thriving units at SNDP HSS ADIMALI today — this is the journey of service that shapes young Indians.
A Government of India scheme under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & SportsThe National Service Scheme (NSS) was launched on 24 September 1969 — the birth centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi — with a single, simple belief: the youth of India could become the country's greatest force for good when they are drawn into service.
Its motto, “Not Me But You”, calls every volunteer to place the community before self. The red-and-blue Konark wheel emblem is a reminder that service is a constant, dynamic motion — never a one-time act.
Volunteers devote 120 hours a year to regular service activities and join a residential special camp each year, living and working with the community they serve.

The Scheme is born
Launched in the Gandhi Jayanti centenary year with volunteers across 37 universities in India.
- 1980s
Wings spread to schools
The scheme expands from colleges into higher secondary schools, opening service to younger volunteers.

Regular activities run through the year, capped by a residential seven-day special camp in the adopted village or ward.

Founding Vision
How It All Began
The National Service Scheme was born from a vision to channel the energy of student youth into nation-building through selfless community service.
Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India, envisioned student youth contributing to nation-building through community service.
The idea was inspired by the volunteer service movements in the United States (VISTA), the United Kingdom (VSO) and Japan (University Social Service).
The motto 'Not Me But You' was chosen to emphasise democratic living and the spirit of selfless service — placing the community before oneself.
Over Five Decades
The Journey of NSS
1969
NSS Launched
The National Service Scheme was launched on 24 September 1969, during the birth centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi, with 37 universities and 40,000 volunteers across India.
1978
National Integration Camps
NSS introduced National Integration Camps to foster unity among volunteers from different states, cultures and languages across the country.
1985
University-Level Programmes
The programme expanded to include university-level coordination cells, structured training for programme officers, and standardised service hour requirements.
1992
Republic Day Camp
The annual Republic Day Parade Camp was introduced in New Delhi, where outstanding volunteers from every state march representing the spirit of NSS.
2014
Swachh Bharat Mission
NSS volunteers became a major force in the Swachh Bharat (Clean India) Mission — organising lakhs of cleanliness drives, toilet construction and waste management campaigns.
2019
50th Anniversary
NSS celebrated its golden jubilee with over 3.8 million active volunteers, programmes spanning 600+ districts and deep community impact across every state.
2024
Digital NSS
The scheme embraced digital platforms for attendance tracking, certificate issuance, and activity reporting — making participation and records accessible online.

How the programme runs
Structure & Service
Two NSS units, a year-long calendar of regular service, and a residential camp — all managed through the portal so students, teachers and parents can follow every activity.
120 hours of service
Each volunteer devotes 120 hours annually to regular activities — cleanliness, literacy, environment and health campaigns.
Residential special camp
Every year, volunteers live in an adopted village for a full week, working alongside residents on survey, awareness and improvement projects.
Leadership formation
Teams are led by student leaders — Captains and Secretaries — mentored by Programme Officers in each unit.
Service breadth
Activities span environment, blood donation, first aid, road safety, education and community development.
